About

Meet our clinicians

Prior to opening Inner Light Therapy, Shanna worked full time as a Clinical Therapist at an acute inpatient psychiatric facility, where she served Military, Veterans, Law Enforcement, First responders, and Community members addressing: PTSD, substance and other addictions, depression, anxiety, attachment issues, relational conflict, suicidal ideation, and other concerns. Shanna enjoys working with individuals and couples who are ready to take positive steps towards growth and healing. This may include processing traumas, developing self-awareness, uncovering identity, learning about their strengths, and/or changing behaviors, thoughts, coping mechanisms, or interpersonal patterns which are no longer working for them. Shanna is an experienced EMDR provider, professionally licensed (LPC) in the state of Alaska, a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC), and a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP). She utilizes a trauma-informed, multicultural perspective to support clients through the processes of: healing from trauma, overcoming addiction, finding more adaptive behavioral and cognitive patterns, and finding greater resiliency, empowerment, and holistic wellness defined by their personal goals and values. Acknowledging the need for help can be difficult and is an important step in working towards healing and wellness. At Inner Light, the priority is to provide a safe, empathic, and compassionate environment in which clients can explore traumas, patterns, coping mechanisms, and other concerns which lead them to therapy. To this end, Inner Light Therapy is pleased to announce the addition of a new clinician to our practice, Derek Keener. Derek is a pre-licensed counselor in the state of Alaska where he has lived for the last 20 years. He graduated with a BS in Psychology in 2017 and an MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in 2022. He has been working in mental health since 2018, including: acute inpatient psychiatric care, co-occurring disorders, group counseling, and individual counseling environments. Prior to his career in mental health, Derek served in the US Air Force for 23 years as an Explosive Ordinance Disposal technician and First Sergeant. Derek is passionate about his work in trauma therapy where he brings an integrative, multicultural approach to helping others heal from past experience. He is EMDR and Emotional Freedom Technique trained and uses these interventions combined with rational-emotive, cognitive-behavioral, and energetic techniques. He has extensive knowledge working with military veterans and first responders as well as those who have experienced sexual assault and intimate partner violence. He is also adept at providing a safe environment to process the most sensitive topics to facilitate healing and holistic wellness.
